Time can catch everyone off guard, especially at the end of the year.
Children see time as something impossibly long and drawn out. Do you remember waiting for Christmas (or your birthday or vacation), thinking it would NEVER arrive? If you were like me, you'd count down the days as the big event you were looking forward to slowly drew closer. And time seemed to drag on forever.
Now the days rip by faster than an F-14A Tomcat hauling Tom Cruise through the stratosphere. Christmas will come and go, as will New Year's Day and every other event in 2023.
It's All in Your Mind -- Literally
The curious thing about the gift of time is how people perceive it.
If you've ever thought that time flies when you're having fun, it's true. The increase in dopamine in your brain makes time appear to go by more quickly. Conversely, lower dopamine levels cause you to perceive time as moving more slowly.
Rapid-firing neurons in our brains synthesize time lapse over a series of events marked in regular intervals. Our brains learn to tell time. They capture 200-millisecond snapshots (the aperture stays open twice as long for people with schizophrenia). as a way of timing signals.
When strung together like so many party lights on a string, these signals indicate the passage of time.
Humans and animals perceive time differently. So do men and women -- and adults and children.
Regardless of one's time perception, there never seems enough of it.
